One way South Broadway Art Project builds community through art is by installing public art. Statisitcs show that in areas where there is public art there are lower levels of vandalism, and vagrance and higer levels of beautification, neigborhood pride, and community activism. Public Art can facilitate the unification of an entire area. South Broadway Art Project approaches public art in several ways. One avenue we are pursuing is to bring various artists together to collaborate on public art projects. We also teach young people and adults how to enhance their community through art. We design and outline public art projects, and bring them to the community itself for particiaption in the actual creating.
Public art projects must make connections amongst people, places, and art, rather than distance themselves, in order to be accepted by the people who will live them. Public art projects must move away from the notion of art as a detached entity and embody instead the idea of integrating art into everyday life as it was in the places of the past. Bringing about this connectedness is an ongoing process and project. SBAP's role in the communities of South Broadway is to make this happen.
South Broadway People Project - This spring we are launching a new public art project called " South Broadway People Project". We will be making life-size free standing silhouettes of "neighbors" of South Broadway. This project will start off one neighbor silhouette at a time. We will be placing these silhouettes indoors, and outdoors within the community of South Broadway. These silhouettes will be painted by: students, residents, visitors, and artists. Stop by our open house " Art Matters" on Friday March 4th 5:30pm - 9:30pm and have your silhouette traced. You never know where you might turn up!
Tiles at Minnie Wood - Since 2007 SBAP has been making tiles with children and adults for a mosaic bench at this revitalized park! We are currently working on fundraising efforts to complete this project.
Froggie Park Mosaic - Since 2007 SBAP has provided materials and opportunities for chldren and residents to participate in the creation of mosaics for the garden at Froggie Park. We are currently working on fundraising efforts to complete this project.
Soulard School Serpent - In 2008 and 2009 students at the Soulard School studied the sculptures of Nikki de Saint Phalle. The students re-created miniature nikki-esque sculptures. One students was chosen to be re-created by SBAP as a life size sculpture for the school.
